Lockouts are irritating. especially when you live in a dorm, at midnight, your roommate is sleeping, and backup keys are two hours away.

Here’s the self-service solution.

I should have made a much more complex combination lock with multiple sensors and flexible customization functionalities, but it’s two in the morning… so maybe next time…

Secret revealed.

It’s kind of low tech in the backstage. All we need are: arduino, plus a servomotor, and, gravity. 8 quarter coins are used as weight. So it’s basically a two dollar solution! (what? the arduino? breadboard servomotor and all the lab kits? well…)

More pictures:

bonus video – playing servomotor with force sensor (warning: not fun to watch at all)

Thanks Li for the force sensor! We”ll have to talk!

I switched to the newer microscope eventually since I didn’t find a way to keep the top light of the QX3 on because I wanted to sample something opaque. Here’s what I got (click to see it REEEAAALLY BIIIGGG):

After taking pictures for whatever I can grab on the table, I decided to create a sketch in Processing for the one cent coin. We never pay good attention to the coins, which are actually cute and fun. I scanned the coins carefully to sample every detail at approximately 300x scale, so that I could put them together later as a collage.

Finally the processing sketch that allows viewers to look into the coin and tracks down their interest in heat map. Red stands for high interest, which means those area in red are viewed most frequently in current session. Yellow stands for medium interest and green means low interest.

The microscope is still quite low-res and is not capable to carry out the whole idea I addressed last week but I think it made its point.

I didn’t make it a smooth experience for the viewer to navigate over the image because I’m still looking for a better way to do it. But I think it’s fine to keep it like this in a non-fashionable and non-flexible way to feel the different scale in each settings.
